Swimming

The University of Chichester Swim Team prides itself on being a team for all, offering training for swimmers of all abilities. Whether you’re a competitive swimmer or have been in the past, swim for fitness or just a bit of fun, we’d love you to join our team. We offer two pool training sessions and two land training sessions.

Each year we offer some of our competitive and fitness swimmers the opportunity to travel to Sheffield to compete in 3 separate BUCS (British Universities and College Sport) competitions. These swimmers are selected based on attendance and effort. We also offer the whole team the opportunity to compete in our annual Varsity competition against Winchester, a great day full of team spirit.

Although we don’t set out to be the best university team in the country, we will always put in 100% at competitions and training. We also have a huge social aspect, just like a lot of the other teams at uni. We also offer ‘sober socials’, the perfect opportunity to spend time with the team outside of the university environment. Joining a sports team like swimming will make your uni experience better than you could imagine. You will form friendships that will last years, as members of the team become your second family.

Competitive swimmers are asked to attend the majority of sessions, particularly swim sessions. Fitness swimmers should also attempt to attend as many sessions as possible, as the benefits of swimming are countless. Swim sessions run in both Chichester and Bognor to cater for students on either campus.

If you are interested in joining the team, and have kit at home such as kick boards, pull buoys, fins and paddles, please bring these with you. If not, don’t worry, we will source you the equipment if and when it is needed.

Like all sports teams at uni, this team is run for students, by students. Our members all value their time with the team:

“Being part of swim is a highlight of uni for me from training to the competitions, it also allowed me to make friends outside of my course. Even though I'm not a big drinker I still feel highly included in the team in social events, which makes me feel very welcome. One of the highlights of swim for me is varsity as it is the one competition where the whole team is involved making for a great day.” Will Price (3nd Year Student)

“I decided to join the swim team during my second year of study. Initially I was apprehensive about fitting in with a group of people who I assumed had created strong relationships, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! The team welcomed everyone (myself included) with open arms, and are one of the friendliest groups of people I’ve ever met. It’s very inclusive, with something for everyone, whether you join as a social, competitive or fitness member like me - you’re bound to have a good time! I’ve been swimming from the age of 5 (not for a club), and never believed that I was capable of swimming competitively. It was only after joining this team that I had the encouragement and support to step out of my comfort zone, taking part and winning my first ever race.” Charlotte Goodship (swim Team Alumni)

“Being a part of the swim team family has majorly improved my life, physically and mentally. I’ve made friends for life and as part of the committee learnt skills that will help me in my future career. I’ve also got to experience brilliant opportunities such as competing at a swimming event in Sheffield (which as a fitness swimmer was a big deal) and going to Croatia on tour. University is an intense time with lots of ups and down and being part of the swim team gave me a support network for the lows and a great bunch of people to share the highs with. If I’d recommend you do anything at Uni it’s to join a sports team, even if you’re an academic student like myself, and in particular to join the Swimming team.” Liam Martin (Swim Team Alumni)

“Joining the UoC Swim Team was easily the best decision of my three years of uni. Not only is the team a welcoming, fun, and loyal bunch of swimmers, but they are also a big WSIHE family. Joining this team guarantees you friends for life and is a load of fun whether it’s at training, meets, WSIHE Wednesdays or sober socials! This is a must join team; it caters for all types of swimmers, competitive or fitness, so no matter how much swim experience you have you should definitely join this family!” Sarah Sheridan (Former President)
