Welcome to the USCU Debate Society. In a time when discussions often divide, we aim to do the opposite and bring people together. Our society is an open forum for all voices and viewpoints, always prioritising respect and curiosity over confrontation. We’ll explore a wide range of topics from politics and philosophy to the performing arts, STEM, and everything in between. Our goal is simple: to create a space for thoughtful, engaging, and civil discussions that broaden perspectives and challenge ideas. Everyone is welcome whether you’re passionate about debate, or just looking to learn and listen to other opinions. All we ask is that you come with an open mind and a willingness to share and listen.
Example debate topics will be: Should 16 year olds have the vote? Should fireworks be banned? Is our society too reliant on cars? Can or should we ban social media for teenagers? Is mainstream music too bland and unoriginal?
This year, we’ll meet regularly from 4–6 PM in Room C120 throughout the first semester. Our first year will be all about building and developing a friendly and inclusive community. Over the next three years, we plan to host guest speakers, invite local politicians ahead of the 2026 local elections, and eventually livestream formal debates.
We proudly uphold free speech and open dialogue but we do not tolerate hate speech or disruption. Our committee represents a broad mix of political views to ensure a fair and balanced environment for all.
Come join us and be part of a community that celebrates ideas, encourages curiosity, and believes in the power of respectful debate.
